Character Creation Addendum: Playing Weird Races

Because we expect new characters to start at level 1, we obviously exert tight control over access to races with a Level Adjustment. We also like our verisimilitude, so we likewise keep a pretty tight rein on the base-level races that just happen to be very weird or rare in the setting. The availability of these races and templates is subject to the rules below.

Players who are eligible to have at least three character slots (which occurs 90 days after the approval of your first PC) are eligible to have one character with a Level Adjustment. These characters will be subject to close scrutiny during approval.

Only races with a Level Adjustment of +1 and no racial Hit Dice are allowed. We do not and have no plans to allow higher Level Adjustments, and we do not use racial classes, "lesser" variants, or LA-buyoff rules; aspiring Drow players, look elsewhere. We also allow people to use this opportunity to play extremely rare LA+0 races that are otherwise disallowed due to their rarity (in such cases, the actual Level Adjustment is not changed). The races allowed are as follows:

  • Bullywug/Siv: See Monsters of Faerun and Player's Guide to Faerun Enhancement for stats. Level Adjustment: +1.
  • Draconic Creature: See Races of the Dragon. Level Adjustment: +1.
  • Extaminaar: See Champions of Ruin. Level Adjustment: +0.
  • Forest Gnome: See Races of Faerun. Level Adjustment: +1.
  • Goblinoids - Goblin, Hobgoblin: See Monster Manual or SRD. Level Adjustment: +0 (goblin), +1 (hobgoblin). Because of the hostility they evoke in this setting, you'll need to show DMs a plan of how you expect to make the character work before approval.
  • Half-Drow: See Races of Faerun. Level Adjustment: +0.
  • Krinth: See Champions of Ruin. Level Adjustment: +0. Note that all krinth must originate from the regions of Anauroch or Shade.
  • Orc - Mountain, Grey: See Monster Manual or SRD for the former, Races of Faerun for the latter. Level Adjustment: +0 (mountain), +1 (grey). Because of the hostility they evoke in this setting, you'll need to show DMs a plan of how you expect to make the character work before approval.
  • Planetouched - Aasimar: See FRCS, Monster Manual, or SRD. Level Adjustment: +1.
  • Planetouched - Azerblood, Celadrin, D'hin'ni: See Dragon #350. Level Adjustment: +1.
  • Planetouched - Genasi (Air, Earth, Fire, or Water): See FRCS. Level Adjustment: +1.
  • Planetouched - Tiefling: See FRCS, Monster Manual, or SRD. Level Adjustment: +1.
  • Spirit Folk - Mountain, River: See Unapproachable East. Level Adjustment: +0.
  • Star Elf: See Unapproachable East. Level Adjustment: +0. Note that all star elves must originate from the regions of Sildeyuir or Yuirwood.
  • Acquired LA+1 templates (e.g., Shadow-Walker or Blooded One from Unapproachable East, Dark Creature from Cormyr: Tearing of the Weave, Chameleon or Faerzess-Infused from Underdark, or Magic-Infused from the WotC website, which can also be added to characters already in play in some cases. Ask a DM for details. (Mulhorandi Divine Minion and Mineral Warrior, while LA+1 and in approved sources, are not allowed.)

There is one other way to obtain an LA+1 character: by sheer chance through the reincarnate spell. We use a custom-built reincarnate table for this site, which does provide a small chance (about 1 in 25) to wind up as either an LA+1 race or as a race we treat as LA+1 by rarity. Characters who wind up as one of these races via reincarnation or replacement are not quite beholden to the standard rules, as a reincarnated PC does not count as a standard LA+1 slot. (This is, for the record, not as awesome a deal as it might seem at first glance.)

Mechanics Note: When making a character with a Level Adjustment of +1, one level of Level Adjustment is added as a favored class to your character sheet, and you receive enough Experience Points to reach the minimum of your new Effective Character Level (ECL).

Additional Note: For those who don't have access to Dragon Magazine #350, here's a quick and easy listing of the races allowed:
Descended from shield dwarves and azers, typically found near the Lake of Steam or in the Small Teeth Mountains of western Amn.
Available Regions: Same as shield dwarves. Also eligible for the Bloodline of Fire regional feat.
* +2 Str, +2 Con, -2 Cha.
* Medium size, speed 30.
* Dwarven Blood.
* Darkvision 60 ft.
* Fire resistance 10.
* Weapon Familiarity (dwarven waraxe, dwarven urgosh).
* Stability (as dwarven racial ability).
* +2 saves vs. poison, spells, and spell-like abilities.
* +1 racial bonus to attack rolls vs. salamanders and mephits with Fire subtype.
* +4 dodge bonus to AC vs. giants.
* +2 racial bonus to Appraise and Craft checks related to fire, stone, or metal.
* Spell-like abilities: 1/day--heat metal (CL equal to HD).
* Forged (+1 saves vs. heat and fire spells and effects; additional +1/5 levels).
* Auto Languages: Common, Dwarven, Ignan. Bonus: Giant, Gnome, Goblin, Orc, Undercommon.
* Favored Class: Fighter.
* Level Adjustment: +1.

Descended from elven worshipers of Hanali Celanil and eladrin, typically found around sun elves in places such as Cormanthor, Evereska, and Evermeet.
Available Regions: Same as sun elves.
* +2 Dex, +2 Cha, -2 Con.
* Medium size, speed 30.
* Elven Blood.
* Darkvision 60 ft.
* Fire resistance 10.
* Elven weapon proficiencies.
* +4 to Perform (song), +2 to Listen, Search, and Spot.
* Auto-search for secret doors (as elven racial ability).
* Spell-like abilities: 1/day--scorching ray (CL equal to HD).
* Melodious Voice (+1 to Diplomacy and Wild Empathy checks; additional +1/5 levels).
* Auto Languages: Celestial, Common, Elven. Bonus: Draconic, Gnoll, Gnome, Goblin, Orc, Sylvan.
* Favored Class: Bard.
* Level Adjustment: +1.

Descended from halfling slaves of the Calim Empire and their djinn overseers, typically found on the Sword Coast, Calimshan, Secomber, Lake Esmel, and the Purple Hills.
Available Regions: Same as lightfoot halflings.
* +2 Dex, +2 Cha, -2 Wis.
* Small size, speed 20.
* Halfling Blood.
* Darkvision 60 ft.
* +1 bonus to all saving throws.
* +2 bonus to attack rolls with thrown weapons and slings.
* +2 to Climb, Jump, Listen, and Move Silently.
* Air Mastery: Airborne creatures take -1 to attacks vs. d'hin'ni.
* Spell-like abilities: At will--prestidigitation; 1/day--gust of wind, whispering wind, or wind wall (CL equal to HD).
* Auto Languages: Auran, Common, Halfling. Bonus: Dwarven, Elven, Gnome, Goblin, Orc.
* Favored Class: Sorcerer.
* Level Adjustment: +1.
