Money-Making 101: Because face-stabbery is expensive.

While there is talk that the new site stuff is making life complicated, I've compiled a short-and-sweet cheat sheet for how to make money in the City of Waterdeep. This was originally something just for myself, but I thought I'd post it for anyone else to use as well. There's nothing new here to worry about.

Money-Making 101 (the simple way)

1) Adventuring
By far the easiest and most time honored tradition. Be at the right place at the right time, and get paid for it (assuming you earn it and live).

2) Monthly Checks
Make a monthly Craft/Profession/Perform roll, per the PHB. As this is a monthly check, multiply your final result by two instead of dividing it by two. This check must be witnessed by a DM in-chat unless you are Taking 10.
Note: If you want to make money using a skill other than the big three, this can be done in the right context. (One might make a living trading information, gossip, and rumors, for example, using Gather Information.) However, you multiply your check result by 4/3 instead of 2 (unless the PHB explicitly says otherwise), and you must have the justification for this skill usage listed on your sheet.

3) Get a Job.
Becoming employed with the Armed Forces, or joining a temple, or agreeing to work for one of the noble houses can land you a monthly paycheck.

4) Make stuff (crafting and enchanting)
Put up a sign saying that you can make stuff, go out and tell people that you make stuff, and wait for customers that are looking for your goods. Typically, serious crafters and enchanters will be listed in the local Trade Guild, and will have fliers in places that their customers would frequent. Many also own or rent shops, or have stalls in the market.

Rule of Thumb #1: Beware of undercutting!
As Mr. Thatch Clemmons (the former proprietor of RD Enterprises) will tell anyone going into business, the Trade Guilds are very protective of their investments and business interests. Depending on whose toes you try stepping on, certain bad things have been known to happen to new entrepreneurs. Things, including but not limited to, slanderous accusations, break-ins, obnoxious customers that don't purchase anything, unwanted late night rust monsters, and assassination attempts have been rumored to take place.

Rule of Thumb #2: Employment Opportunities
Each organization has set expectations for its employees. A character can commit to work for one organization, whether it be a church, a noble house, the city, or running their own shop. Each of these grants a monthly stipend to the character, and no character may earn more than one stipend per month. A character earning a monthly stipend is still eligible to make a weekly craft/profession/perform check, as long as they meet all the other requirements for such checks.

As a side note, there are plenty of organizations available that are not currently listed on the site. We're basing this campaign on the City of Splendors book, and are using the "Guilds" section as a reference for different groups. ("Guilds" includes temples, miliary groups, and just about every other kind of group as well in this case.) If there is something you'd like to get involved with but can't find it here, please feel free to ask a DM for details. We'll get things posted for public display as soon as possible, but we're concentrating our efforts on other things at the moment.

For now on, rolls for money will be done on a once per month basis, using the rules listed above. Please refer to the new ruling from now on.
