Local Rumors

Postby Ian » Sat Jan 24, 2009 5:05 pm

The Sea Stacks Island wrote:A group of enterprising dwarves, including some members of the Cellarers' and Plumbers' Guild, have discovered an ancient network of caves and catacombs beneath the ruins of an old lighthouse on one of the small barrier islands south of the Sea Stacks.

There are rumors that the catacombs hold a small vein of the strange material riverine--news and potential implications of which have sent curious arcanists and scholars all a-twitter, but the dwarves are so far being very tight-lipped. Armed men have recently been seen patrolling the island.

The Crazy Eights and the Eastern Village wrote:A group of ruin explorers known as the Crazy Eights are spreading rumors about a village east of Waterdeep being terrorized by some sort of undead creature. Supposedly the creature controls a treasure of some potency, and the Eights are willing to go halfsies with any group that will help them slay the creature.

The Rogue Potion-Merchant wrote:A new potion-seller has popped up. Kell Agarion, a charming middle-aged half-elven man, sells potions and alchemicals at 40% off the market price. He also offers to identify magic items, potions, and scrolls free of charge, and will purchase those that intrigue him for a generous price.

It may seem too good to be true, but several of his customers actively attest to the quality of his wares. His location seems to change daily, keeping him one step ahead of the Merchants' Guild (who is reportedly very close to putting out a bounty on his head), but supposedly his customers know where to go to get what they're looking for.

Other rumors scuttle about more quietly, and may only be available to those of specific groups that go looking for them.

[Anyone who wants more information on any of this stuff, or is just looking for generally interesting things to know/do, can track me down for it. I won't guarantee that any of my "generally interesting things" are applicable to your characters, but it never hurts to keep an ear to the ground. *g*

Edit to Add: Re-formatted slightly, separating the rumors for easier reading.]

Skoren visits the Crazy Eights to learn more about exactly what kind of undead is about on the island.

The Sea Stacks Island wrote:Many among the city's dwarves hear that there has been a vein of some rich material found on the island, and the initial group that made the discovery is looking for volunteers to help in excavation.

The Crazy Eights and the Eastern Village wrote:The Crazy Eights are still at the Purple Palace in Dock Ward, though they're making noises about going elsewhere for assistance, or of going to take another crack at their quarry on their own.

The Rogue Potion Merchant wrote:Kell Agarion has gotten somewhat harder to find lately, as the Merchant's Guild has stepped up its search for him, but it doesn't seem to have hurt his sales any. Some among the Guild's potion-brewers and alchemist are venting their frustrations openly these days; he must be hurting their business more than they've let on.

House Bladesemmer wrote:There was some sort of commotion last night at the Bladesemmer estate. No word on what happened has made the open rounds yet, but while the Watch was initially seen checking into things, they have shown no further interest.

As more information slowly trickles out into the open, things continue happening, and more info becomes available behind the scenes for those willing to go look for it...

...and if no one goes to look for it, of course, by the time everything's clear to everybody, it may be too late for anybody to deal with it. (OOCly, this is the nice way of saying that I don't like to just let my plot hooks dangle--they change depending on how long they sit, and they go away if they sit too long. *g*)

After looking into the issue, Talia notes that she has neither the time nor the particular expertise to deal with it, but agreed with the Bladesemmers to direct any interested parties their way, and puts the word out to some of her friends.

[Not entirely a rumor so much as a simple IC post, but it's most appropriate for this thread.]

A large Moonwood Company caravan arrived in the city yesterday from Baldur's Gate, with a plethora of supplies and exotic goods from the southern regions of Amn and Calimshan.

A number of passengers accompanied the caravan, which is not in itself unusual.

Among them was a foppish man going by Kreizel Thane, who was known to no one in the caravan before his request to travel with it, who was met en route by a strange woman who then accompanied him to Waterdeep, and who disappeared into the teeming masses immediately upon his arrival--leaving his carriage behind.

A shrug and a sale of the abandoned carriage to a well-to-do young woman later, and Thane's presence is forgotten by those few that even noticed it in the first place. This sort of thing happens all the time in the City of Splendors.

Tying up some loose ends and loosening some more...

The Rogue Potion Merchant wrote:Kell Agarion's bloated corpse was fished out from underneath the Docks this morning. No indication on who the Watch thinks eventually caught up with him, but someone certainly decided selling cheap potions is a capital offense in this town.

House Bladesemmer wrote:Rumor has it that one of the Sword Coast's newer relic hunters, Katrina Madrin, took some hirelings into the sewers and fixed whatever problem the Bladesemmers were having. Stories are many and varied on what exactly they needed, but the most common refer to some sort of escaped monster needing captured.

The Sea Stacks Island wrote:The dwarves are still playing things extremely close to the chest with regards to what they've found under the old lighthouse on the island in the Sea Stacks. Some have noted seeing far fewer dwarves from that general neighborhood altogether of late. Perhaps they've started mining something...but if so, where's the product going?

(If anyone would have contacts among the city's dwarves, the Cellarer's and Plumber's Guild, or the docks in general, you specifically might be privy to more information, though anyone's welcome to be curious. FPM me for details.)

The Rain of Fish wrote:Strange weather continues all along the Sword Coast--while nothing so bizarre as a rain of fish has occurred again, many of the local sailors and fishermen are complaining that their typical methods of predicting the area's weather patterns have gone haywire recently, and no one can begin to figure out what the weather is going to do from day to day. Meanwhile, three days ago Baldur's Gate reported their earliest snowfall in a decade.

Nobles Playing Cloak-and-Dagger? wrote:Some folks are whispering that a couple of different nobles have put out subtle feelers regarding some work to be done by anyone who fancies themselves discreet. Pay could be pretty good, given the employers, but the gods only know what they'd want you to do for it.
"Nothing will ever change. That cycle of mediocrity isn't due to some obstacle. It's who you are. The thing standing in the way of your dreams is that the person having them is you."

The below is not rumor, but actual news. Included is both the common knowledge of the event itself and what the average person might know about the people involved.

Just after nine bells this evening, an explosion rocked the Sashtar Street home of Artemis Thann, chief merchant-master of House Thann. According to her surviving servants, Lady Artemis was entertaining other members of the House when the explosion occurred, including Lady-Consort Cassandra Arunsun Thann. A fire then engulfed the Lady's library and the south wing of her home, but it was contained due to the diligent efforts of concerned citizens and the Watch, and the house itself will likely be salvageable.

Lady Artemis was killed in the blast, as were three house agents. Two other members of House Thann were injured, including the Lady-Consort.

Other members of House Thann were visibly shaken by the news, while House Patriarch Rhammas Thann called all surviving members and agents to the Thann villa to discuss the situation. The House is working diligently with the Watch to determine who or what was responsible for this tragedy.

House Thann is well-known for its merchantile endeavors, including a well-developed shipping network that ties Waterdeep to cities as far away as Tethyr. Lady Artemis was the chief administrator of this network for over a decade, and House Thann will likely have a difficult time replacing her business acumen. It is believed that Lady Artemis's primary assistant, Thann agent Preter Helstadt, will assume control of the house's shipping network until a full member of the House is named to the position.

[Anyone who decides to look into this matter further, track me down for info.]

Archer was one of the Watchman to help put out the fire. He wasn't even on duty, having been walking by when he saw the fire. He helped carry buckets(many buckets, he's beefy) to stamp out the fire.

Archer's first hunch was that the attack was a planned assassination enacted by rival mercantile competitors. Archer attempts to interview some members of house Thann to discover who their rivals are. (let me know if I get anything)

P.S.

Archer will also disguise himself as an ordinary citizen. Since he is relatively new in Waterdeep, he feels that no one will notice him. He will be on stake out outside Thann estate. He will be staying at any inns that give a good view of the estate, and he will regularly make "casual strolls" around the property. He will be on the look out for any strange activity.

Archer will also hire a vagabond to follow Hardstadt and report where he goes and when.

Corcorin Brightsilver of Silverymoon, new to Deepwater, though a veteran Palidin in the order of the Knights of the Merciful Sword, has been working closely with trusted long-time friend, Archer Strongarm. After things quieted down around the city seemed a good time to get some outside info. Late into the night, to just before sunrise, local night fishermen and shipment managers at the several of the docks were questioned about potential enemies of the House of Thann. Using some points in Charisma and Negotiating it shouldn't be hard to at least get them talk

(lemmie know how this is going)

This particular rumor has already been looked into, and the story of it makes for interesting reading.

Apologies for the oversight--I should have linked that into this thread back when it happened.
