Finding the Family Jewels

Postby Kemian » Fri Jul 15, 2011 7:05 am

Runa, Aster, Khes, Anami, Karlist, Clara, and Elliot had accepted a job to recovered a pair of "misplaced" gems that had once been in the position of House Gundwyn's Matriarch. Tiberius Gundwyn had explained to them that he had intelligence on where the jewels were now located.

The catch was that they were in Undermountain, near the entrance that so many aventurers had used before at the Yawning Portal.

So the heros bravely made their way down into the entrance chamber and got their bearings. Clara providing the dwarven Dark Vision necessary to determine their best course forward. There was some shuffling and josteling as the party decided who should be up front and who should be towards the rear of the group as they traveled through Undermountain.

Eventually the settled on placing the beefier comrades up front placing the mages to the rear. As they moved northward through the a large tunnel their were signs that the group was being watched that they simply did not pick up on. They failed to carefully examine the walls of the tunnel above eye level and so it was only just before the goblins attacked that the party had any warning that they were coming. They scrambled out of the murder holes dug along the sides of the tunnel and attacked. Falling upon the center of the group first attacking Runa, Clara, and Anami fortunately the goblins didn't have the best aim and all of their attacks failed.

The second wave came and hit the rear of the party Karlist used his crossbow to hit one of the charging unfortunately for him that drew the attention of the goblins and two of them brained Karlist and the wizard lay on the ground bleeding. The sorceror Anami stepped back and dropped one of the Goblins with a magic missle and Clara dropped a second with her quick mace work another group of goblins launched javelins ineffectually at the group from a distance as Khes tried to even the score but stumbled as he was about to charge and missed. Fortunately the Wood Elven warrior Aster had a line on one of the goblins at the rear of the group and charged with his great sword and cleaved the ugly blighter in twain leaving goblin bits all over those around him including himself. Runa blasted another of the goblins and the route was on. The Goblins fled having won the day and learned an important lesson about dungeon crawling. Always have a proper rearguard.

The group of heroes composed themselves after the fight with the goblins and made their way through the maze of corridors heading both north and east as they had been directed. They were cautious and avoided a set up traps and it was not that long before they arrived at a long corridor, with door and a little farther down the hall a large open room.

Khess and Karlist both detected light coming from the open room and so the group decided to investigate. They came upon a mated pair of ogres. One tending a small fire the other fast asleep. The party spent a considerable amount of time trying to decide if 7 to 2 odds were one sided enough for them to warrent entering the open chamber and risk a fight with the Ogres. They were reluctant but finally they arrived at a compromise. They sent a sacraficial lamb into the room. Elliot the least experienced entered the room looking for clues of where the gems might be found.

Unfortunately for Elliot he wasn't particularly good at hiding nor at moving about the room quietly and so the Ogre defending his mate and his home attacked the intrude. He used a Long Spear and ran Elliot through the chest and the young man collapsed in a pool of blood. His companions shocked into doing something finally entered into battle with the two Ogres defending their home.

Runa moved through the bottle neck of burgelers at the entrance and used her ability to blast the one that had valiently felled the intruder. Then Aster lept into action swinging his sword and missing. The ogre responded by swinging his great club and bringing it down on Asters shoulder snapping bone and dislocating the shoulder.

Khess charged foward flanking the male ogre and getting a nasty slash across it's belly. The Ogress on her feat now attacked Khess and missed. Karlist attempted to manuever to get a clear shot but both his targets were now in melee and he did not wish to injure any of the other burgelers so he waited. Anami completed the initial assault with magic missle to the male defending Ogre.

The battle continued on with Runa trying to finish off the Ogre who was not looking very healthy but she her blast went wide to the right. Clara moved to do battle with the Ogress but she missed as did Khess. Aster did not miss however when he spilled the mighty Ogre defenders blood everywhere gutting the creature from stem to stern. The Ogress outraged at the death of her mate attacked Aster visciously and hit his leg shattering the bone and the Elven warrior fell the ground unconcious.

The agressors pressed their advantage mercilessly and the fight ended with Khess severing a major artery on the Ogress and her falling to the ground dead. What the party had not noticed during the fight was the arrival of another. Someone who had planted the story of the location of the Gundwyn family heirloom's someone who understood that given the location close to entrance of Undermountain that the family would choose less experienced adventurers. Those he could intimidate and force to deliver a message for him to Tiberius Gundwyn. If you want your property restored pay Sigavax the Ogre Mage a ransom in gold.

In order to show proof that he had the gems, the Ogre Mage gave the young adventurers one of them to return to the Gundwyn's he also understood it would deter them from doing anything foolish like attempt to attack mighty Sigavax and mar his reasonable message with blood shed. The party made their way back through Undermountain alive and they returned the gem to Tiberius Gundwyn who was intrigued by the story of this Ogre Mage. he was especially appreciative when Elliot informed him whom the gem had been taken from, Sigavax had said his name was Rigel. Tibuerius thanked the group for their hard work and his family paid each of them 350 Gold in reward. Combined with the gems and Gold looted from the Ogres the split was 390 Gold per person.
