Sparkly Vampires: Not Just For Teen Girls Anymore

Postby Ian » Sun Jun 15, 2014 9:28 pm

The common room of a minor tavern on the Street of Bells in Castle Ward was burned last night under mysterious circumstances as the Watch waged battle with a number of bizarre creatures. According to the testimony of Watch-Captain Stahl Gregor, he and a patrol he was inspecting were responding to a report of a break-in and assault at Phalantar's Philtres and Components, just across the street, when the perpetrator flung a flask through the door at the Watchmen. The flask was thought to be alchemist's fire, but as it struck and caught the tavern ablaze, a bizarre creature--animate fire, smoking, sparking, and writhing like liquid flame the color of pure rubies--emerged and began attacking those nearby!

The unknown creature, later termed a "Fire Vampire" by consulted sages, quickly slew four Watchmen, and more of its number instantly rose from the ashen dead. The Grey Hands were summoned, but a group of skilled citizens responded faster, and even as the Guild of Watermen began heroically attempting to contain the blaze until the Watchful Order could arrive to extinguish it, the citizens assisted Watch-Captain Gregor in dispatching the Fire Vampires. One Fire Vampire escaped into the burning building, but was not seen to emerge; it is suspected the creature was killed when the Watchful Order arrived and summoned water elementals to extinguish the blaze.

Five patrons of the bar were injured due to burns and smoke inhalation, while seven bystanders were injured in the chaos of the retreating crowds, and Phalantar's assistant was injured by the burglar, but the only fatalities were those of the Watchmen. Two of the bystanders were injured by a runaway carriage belonging to House Ilzimmer, the horses of which were apparently spooked by a figure matching the burglar's description shortly after the battle.

Watch-Captain Gregor publicly thanked his rescuers in a brief ceremony at the Palace, without whom he would surely have been immolated and turned into another of the foul creatures.

Two of the intervening citizens (Burgon and Kylan) claimed the suspect vanished via magic, and the Watch is still seeking the knave in earnest. The perpetrator is wanted for murder with magic, attempted murder, assault, thievery, and destruction of property. It is described as a large figure armored in tarnished gold plate, black-cloaked, wearing a full helm, and armed with an oversized sword. Citizens are urged to avoid the suspect and contact the Watch immediately if they encounter him.

We need be quick, the fires whispered in their strange planar pidgin. This structure will collapse soon.

The process came to her, how to turn the powers of dismissal to those of binding. To surround it with her blood, charged with primal energy. To choose a form for its imprisonment, for its protection. The contract made, it willingly allowed itself to be encircled...and as the circle closed with a shimmering pulse of crimson light, the creature collapsed on itself, folding quickly into a simple form: a copper ring, clattering with a surprisingly heavy noise on the charred ruins of the floorboards.

The ring was emblazoned with two sigils: one, a drop of blood superimposed over a ball of fire, the other, a glyph of unknown tongue, likely a Name. It was warm to the touch, and not just because the room was on fire.

Three days later, Burgon receives a missive, written in a tight but ornate hand, sealed with green wax, and stamped with a stylized O. The paper on which it is written is stiff and high-quality, and lightly scented.

Master Goldwirth,

I have spoken to my assistant, and a colleague who has told me more of what might have occurred at my shop, and I understand you may be able to provide some assistance in looking into this matter further. If you consent to meet with me, please appear at the Crawling Spider at eight bells this evening. My assistant will be waiting near the door, and will escort you to me. I would request that you come alone, or with an agent that can be trusted to exercise discretion.

Regards,
-- Phalantar Orivan

Shortly after Burgon reads it, the paper crinkles and crumbles into a dry greenish dust.

Aulric, Devon, Kylan, Burgon, Magerris, Jax, Kaleolani:
Watch-Captain Gregor asked each of you to appear the following morning at the Palace. There, you each receive his personal thanks, along with a prize of seven harbor moons (a consortium-issued trading coin worth fifty dragons in Waterdeep and thirty in places within a day's ride, but little beyond). As known adventurers, you are also granted access to the Watch's potion storehouse, and allowed to take a single basic draught or oil of your choice.

The city's Watchmen know your names, and you might get a little extra consideration from them for a while.

OOCly: You get coinage worth 350 gp, and your choice of any one 1st-level potion or oil from the SRD. Gold and XP will be added once you've all picked your extra potion.

Burgon attends the Palace with much delight. Refinement, people of standing, possibility of good food and drink.... he's as happy as a cleric in heaven!

He's not certain he likes to be labeled an 'adventurer' as such, but concedes that the extra prestige that can come with the title won't hurt his standing among the other merchants... may also make a few of them think twice before they try to cheat him he thinks!

Examining the array of potions and oils on display, he selects one labeled 'Mage Armour'. After all, being the exceptionally paranoid, targetable upper class (or so he perceives himself), one can never be too careful. He MAY even be able to avoid appearing in public fully armoured thanks to this handy little drop! Maybe....

Regarding the letter, he thinks that it is prudent to include another in the matter, just in case. To this end he contacts Aulric, who is probably his most trusted friend and also a capable enough fellow in a pickle. Once he has (hopefully) more solid leads, he plans to track down some of the capable sorts already involved in the attack to pass on what he learns...

((We'll try and get a scene in before you go away Ian. Then I can post whatever transpires and the other PC will receive news via a private letter. Will play this as it comes, but hopefully we'll be able to get a time that works for us both.))

((Journal entry 4 for Burgon is related to the events subsequent to the scene. Here I've included a letter to Aulric that Burgon writes. It's with British spelling in case you wonder ;-)))

Dearest Friend Aulric Dragonhawk,

I do hope that this letter finds you promptly and in good health. I have potentially exciting news which I simply must share with you. I have received correspondence from a mysterious gentleman who happens to be the proprietor of business attacked by the armoured figure, the same one which released the odd fire elementals as a distraction. I believe this man may have information pertaining to the artefact or artefacts the armoured figure was seeking. Having offered my assistance in this matter, a meeting has been arranged at eight bells this very evening. The meeting is to be held at the Crawling Spider. A place with which I am not familiar. I am allowed to bring a single agent with me to this meeting and I can think of no one more adequately suited and capable than yourself. Please see me with urgency if you are able to render your services to this matter.

Yours in faith and profit, Master Burgon Goldwirth, Favoured of Waukeen and Purveyor of fine carpets and silks.
Of course it's evil! Kill it!

(( Little note, to be included in thought as we wrap this part up))

(( This is Canon, as con-currently only Devon knows))

Kale has quite the extra burden, communing with such as this creature has left her with a great task of taking it someplace. That being likely beyond a place that she can go alone, and will require the aid of others. \

((People can get with me and find out just what Kale did with that elemental vampire, and what promises have been made!))

[09:28:23 AM] Aulric DragonHawke: Aulric read the letter sent from Burgon, smiling he started walking to where the cleric resided. "You know Sarafina, I think helping Burgon with this mysterious intruder that started the fire, will help me with my conscious with the victims that were burned alive in the attack."
