Missing Persons (low-mid range Murd plot thread)

Postby Murdling » Mon Nov 03, 2014 2:35 pm

Four people had gone and received a job with little fanfare and less respect from their employer, a harried and unimpressed clerk in the employ of House Amcathra. He'd informed them of a missing young man of their House and pointed them toward a gambling hall the young man frustratingly insisted on slumming about in from time to time.

When Garnic, Nazka, Atala, and Eadlin arrived at it they found a brawl already in progress of some who had gotten to the employer first. Garnic saw fit to commit them to joining the fight, and by the time it was done they were looking at quite a few fallen (though none among their own in spite of Garnic being quite injured) and an entirely shut and evacuated gambling hall.

The Watch doesn't take overly long arriving afterward, but there's a few minutes they can use to check the pockets of the fallen. At least one or two of them. A dead elven ranger from one of the two groups has apparently nobody to give the ass of a rodent about. The other wounded are either revived or are seen over by their surviving comrades.

((Majority of the loot in this is going to come at the finale. However you find the following things on the dead elven ranger (some may have been meant for his brother the wizard but thy weren't on his person, and are available to claim here.))

1x scroll of rope trick
1x scroll of fist of stone
1x potion of ventriloquism
1x potion of magic mouth (Speak into it, close the bottle, then hurl. It shouts the words you spoke loudly wherever it lands.)
1x unknown object (small amount of azure gel in vial)

Nazka, Eadlin, Azrael and Kathryn found themselves exploring a short ways into a sewer tunnel under the streets of Waterdeep in search of the missing Amcathra boy, Oswald. Shortly in finding evidence of some gruesome ritual and a seething horde of rats stained with the bluish purple gel that has been showing itself all about this case. The rats behaved in far too intelligent and hostile a manner for mere beasts, and even appeared to swallow a flame ray thrown at them by Eadlin in the ensuing combat - but eventually were driven to retreat.

The group finds a square shaped array of arcane runes, with a warding circle in it's center. With each of the four corners of the small alcove having a corner of the square array pointing at them, and also holding a rather horrid pile of blood and shards of bone and clothing.

The more arcane minded of them deduce the array took the lives of those in the four corners quite violently and somehow fed it to the fifth person in the room, who Kathryn suspects might be the Amcathra boy after finding a scrap of clothing with the house insignia on it ripped off and thrown to the ground at the scene.

They also find a few scattered bits of jewelry the rats didn't eat.

Addendum: Trying to follow the route out the other side of the chamber leads to more sewer tunnels of the same sort they arrived by. There are numerous places to return to the surface from along the way, and the chances to find evidence of which one was used are slim but not impossible.

"So, this is now a dead end ... we know that the boy was likely here, that he possibly killed four of his companions to some end, and that he in some way used the same potion as was found on the elven ranger," Kathryn summarizes.

"Alternatively...the boy is long-dead and something used his form to mislead the four companions to their death here."

Isn't she just a little ray of sunshine?

"So that leaves us with ... the elf who you said had a flask similar to the one we found broken, and that was covering the rats," she says to Nazka. "Who was survived by only one elf?"

Nazka shook his head "The vial of goo I have. Came from a mages brother. I know this because I shot the mage and his brother flipped out and chucked a knife at me. I put an arrow through his throat for that. Any way after Garnic looted the bodies that was found on the mages brothers body along with a few scroll and the like. Figure it belonged to the caster." He shrugged "What I've been able to find out is this "stuff is not any natural material you can think of. It's thick, but doesn't stick to flesh. Doesn't mix with anything willingly. Seems to have a fairly strong raw magical charge to it for such a small amount though and you could swear you hear whispers while touching it. It might be a spell component, but you've no idea what spell it would be for. And that is about it so far." He explained with a shrug.

Scratching his chin a moment a few gears started rolling "The Dwarf. He smashed the brothers head in before disappearing. Though I would like to run the mage down I think it would be easier to run down the dwarf. They tend to be louder." He said with a smile.

The group (or parts thereof) engaged in quite the mess of information gathering shortly after exhausting their avenues underground. First tracking down the dwarf from the first scuffle, and a short interrogation later they find themselves taking their vial of goo to a local wizard for examination. After paying the Gnome to perform a Scrying on it for them they were treated to just a few minutes of someone in a dark room peering into a lavish study. The study contained two people speaking - one a bald man and the other out of sight. They spoke mostly in some foreign tongue that they feel might be Thayan given the trappings of the room itself, but other than the initial comments in Chondathan about 'the boy' being a liability and the final word hinting at some unpleasant consequences to come soon nobody understood exactly what was said.

Our intrepid party, having secured permission from the Thayan Enclave to investigate as well as a couple of small pieces of help from them, now sets off toward one of the three homes they were pointed toward by their bald chilly intern. ((You folks will be heading from inn to house quickly I expect. If this is going to involve staking the place out let me know, otherwise I will assume you waste no time given that it seemed like the boy was in growing danger of outliving his usefulness.))

A convergence happened in the end of this quest, timing all centering around the house of an ambassador on midday of a winter's day. Cold air, concealed intentions, heated arguments. A draconic sorceress arguing with a thayan wizard, a noble tracker and a worried paladin trying to keep the peace, a young watchman trying to do his job - and yet the powder keg never blew. Apart from stabbing remarks and a bloody nose they returned Oswald Amcathra to the fold - more or less.

The Thayan, Ignacious Thrace is never seen in Waterdeep again after that afternoon. One has to guess at what that means though for the Thayans will not say.

Oswald's family has him almost as vanished within the day, under house arrest in his family's estate pending the investigations and possible trial. Most certainly expelled from the Magisters Order though, and certainly having cost his family quite a lot of trust and money.

As far as trust and money go though - there was civic duty done this day by loyal citizens - for the most part. ((Loot list to come shortly))

Garnic and Atala receive a small stipend for help in 'quieting' the riot that broke out at the gambling house.

Cypre, Katherine, Azrael, Nazka, Eadlin are Recognized for returning the boy and doing good work for the city. Offered money and a selection of trinkets - some donated by the House, some by the Enclave, some by the Magisters. (You all average out to about 225 gold per session. That puts Nazka and Eadlin at 1350, Kat and Azrael at 900, Cypre at 675 - the following list is priced at what it'll take out of your loot to claim it, and is 1/2 it's normal price. That price is ONLY good right now, and yes you can use your existing gold to buy in more if you go over your total reward.)

+1 Darkwood Heavy Shield (0 ACP, +3 AC) 630 gold
Least Crystal of Energy Assault (Cold) 300 gold
--(attach to mwrk weapon for 1 cold dmg per hit)
Wand of Capture Minor Image (10 charges) 75 gold
Least Crystal of Adaptation 250 gold
--(attach to mwrk armor for endure elements effect)
+1 Rapier 1010 gold
Vest of Resistance +1 (+1 to saves) 500 gold
Traveler's Cloak 600 gold (*1)
Ring of Climbing +3 450 gold
Ring of Feather Falling 1100 gold (*2)
Ring of Protection +1 1000 gold
Steadying Robe 500 gold (*3)
Badge of Valor 500 gold (*4)
Wand of Detect Magic 190 gold

The following items are consumable freebies:

Potion of Cure Light Wounds
Potion of Light (Grenadelike)
Scroll of Blockade
Scroll of Fist of Stone

1: A traveler's cloak provides the benefit of endure elements for cold, as well as containing a canteen that fills itself with cold water or hot honeyed tea if kept in the cloak pocket. It always contains trail bread in a similar pocket, and can unfold into a tent with a command word.

2: This ring activates a Feather Fall effect if the wearer falls more than 5 feet.

3: This robe prevents the wearer from needing to make concentration checks to cast spells in rough environments like being buffeted by wind or trying to cast on a ship in a stormy sea.

4: This badge provides a +2 bonus to saves vs. fear, expanded to +4 vs. intimidate checks.

Kathryn asks for the minor items - the energy assault augment crystal, the adaptation crystal, both of the wands, and the scroll of Fist of Stone. (815gp of her 900 gp share.)

If anyone else wants one of the items, they can totally talk about that.
